Teaching

From 1990 – 2017 I was an independent arts educator & creative mentor, running innovative workshops and residency programs in countless schools and other settings throughout Melbourne and across Tasmania.  Mainly I was known for my hands-on Creative Cartooning workshops, which taught children sophisticated drawing skills as well as inspiring creative thinking, well-being and emotional communication skills.  Over the years I also facilitated a hugely diverse range of  projects focused on creativity and well-being, in the areas of community arts, youth services and mental health. From 2002 – 2005 I initiated and directed the Bruny Kids Artzone Festival, Tasmania’s only children’s arts festival.

After a break of several years, I returned to my teaching work in 2023. This archive is a work-in-progress but attempts to give an idea of the diversity of my work as an educator, and some of my underlying motivations and passions for creative learning. There is nothing more satisfying than those moments when I see a person light up with a new realisation or inspiration, or just the sheer joy of ‘I can do this!’.
